The Problem
Museums, exhibition designers, and event build teams use enormous quantities of panel material — MDF and particleboard — to construct plinths, display cases, wall linings, temporary structures, and set installations. This material is used once, or for a limited installation period, and then disposed of. In enclosed gallery or exhibition spaces, formaldehyde off-gassing from freshly cut MDF is a documented air quality concern — particularly relevant where artefacts, sensitive collections, or long visitor dwell-times are involved.
For museum operations teams and exhibition contractors working under sustainability mandates, the single-use, non-biodegradable, formaldehyde-emitting profile of conventional panel is increasingly difficult to justify.
How Ábhar Addresses It
Ábhar's panels provide a direct substitute that eliminates the formaldehyde concern at source. For applications where material will be installed in enclosed public spaces or in proximity to sensitive collections, the absence of VOC emissions is operationally significant. For temporary structures that will be decommissioned after installation, the designed-in biodegradability of the panels means end-of-life disposal has a credible, lower-impact pathway.
